“Music in the Church”
January 23, 2010
Dr. Timothy Smith

Dr. Smith, organist and music director of New York’s Riverside Church (1992-2008) is now organist/music director of Bethlehem’s historic Trinity Episcopal Church. He has performed in some of the most beautiful and historic houses of worship here and abroad. Dr. Smith will help us learn about the history of hymnody and organ music for the church. This interactive session will include lecture, demonstrations at the organ, and a chance to sing together.

February 13, 2010
Rev. Dr. Brian Wren &
Rev. Dr. Susan Heafield

The Rev. Dr. Brian Wren has written hymns that appear in hymnals around the world, including fourteen in the United Methodist Hymnal. He is the author of several books, including Praying Twice, The Music and Words of Congregational Song. Like Smith, Wren lives nearby and he and his wife, the Rev. Dr. Susan Heafield, pastor of the Paupack UMC, have agreed to come and help us learn how hymn texts are composed and then set to music. This interactive session will include an opportunity to sample some of Dr. Wren’s many CD’s.

March 13, 2010
Dr. Richard Hoffenberg

Dr. Hoffenberg, who studied at Princeton, Westminster Choir College, and Yale University, is now an assistant professor of music at Marywood University and director of the choral ensembles. He will help us learn about the history of sacred choral music, sharing with us examples of choral music – both ancient and modern.
“In Quest of a Spiritual Journey”

Rev. Dr. Doug Miller

A contemporary writer on spirituality shares a wonderful story of a boy who fell out of bed. When his Mom asked him what happened, he answered, “I don’t know. I guess I started too close to where I got in.”

Do you seek a deeper understanding and experience of God? Join Doug Miller as he seeks to discover why it is risky resting on the edge. No one should dare stay “where we got in.”

Pick a time in your not-too-distant past as a starting point and reflect on these questions:

• How is my spiritual journey?
• Has my joy increased?
• Have I grown?
• Am I open to the Holy Spirit?

Sharing, reading, praying, meditation, focusing, laughter and “questing” will be part of our time together.

The Rev. Dr. Doug Miller is the Minister of Evangelism at the Hawley United Methodist Church and pastor of Barryville, New York United Methodist Church. He is a retired member of the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference, retiring as the District Superintendent on the Delaware District and Dean of the Cabinet. He is the recipient of the Harry Denman Award for Evangelism. His Master of Sacred Theology degree is from Boston University and Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University. Doug joined the staff of the Hawley Church in the fall of 2008.
